WHAT IS MULBERRY SILK?
Mulberry silk is created by the Bombyx Mori silkworm from a diet made exclusively of mulberry tree leaves, producing the highest quality silk thread which is the least allergenic of all natural fibres and is considered the most luxurious. An authentic silk filled duvet should contain A Grade 100% mulberry silk.
WHY MULBERRY SILK?
Mulberry silk is made up of long, strong threads which make a remarkably strong durable duvet, be cautious of low grade silk which is made up of waste filaments producing short stands and dust like fibres.
WHY IS SILK HYPO-ALLERGENIC?
Mulberry silk starts out as pure, clean strands of fibre held together with a natural glue called sericin. It is processed without the use of chemicals, our supplier actually washes the strands in spring water to avoid contamination with impurities from tap water. Sericin naturally repels the dust mite, a major source of allergens, making the fibre naturally hypo-allergenic.
WHY IS SILK TEMPERATURE ADJUSTING?
A silk duvet naturally drapes over your body, eliminating air pockets, due to the stretched silk being hand layered in a criss-cross fashion, the silk strands adhere to each other allowing the duvet to be remarkably stable preventing bunching completely. Silk will also absorb up to a third of itsí weight in moisture, keeping us dry and comfortable while we sleep.
WHY OCCASIONAL AIRING OF THE DUVET IS BENEFICIAL?
The traditional way of airing the duvet for an hour or two in gentle sunlight allows the moisture in the silk to dry out, making the duvet fresh again thus improving the insulating properties.
HOW LONG WILL MY DUVET LAST?
With proper care, our Silkyard duvets are guaranteed to last up to ten years.
WHY DO SILKYARDíS DUVETS AND PILLOWS HAVE ZIP OPENINGS IN THE SEAM?
Our silk filled duvets and pillows have discreet openings so that every item we receive can be quality checked to ensure that our silk is soft, lustrous, pearly in colour and even. It is also interesting for our customers to be able to see what is inside their duvet or pillow.
WHY DO SILKYARD SELL LINEN SEPARATELY NOT IN SETS?
We feel that selling our silk linen individually provides our customers with more flexibility in choosing their requirements without having to be stuck with items they do not require. Some of our customers love sleeping under a silk flat sheet but on top of a cotton fitted sheet!
WHAT IS MOMME WEIGHT?
Momme weight is the Japanese method of weighing silk and pearls. For silk bed linen a momme weight of 12-19 is considered good quality, with a range of 16-19 being very high quality. The higher the momme weight, the greater the amount of silk used in the weaving process, making a better quality fabric which holds up to repeated laundering. Silk clothing is often in the 8-12 momme weight range, while a gentlemanís silk suit would have a momme weight of 22.
Silk bed linen should also have a thread count of 400 threads per inch.
WHAT WEIGHT ARE SILKYARD DUVETS?
Silkyard duvets are 200g/sqm equivalent to 2-3 blankets, if buttoning two duvets together a 400g/sqm weight is equivalent to 4-6 blankets.
